I’M NADA ABDELGAWAD, AN INTERIOR DESIGNER WITH A BACHELOR’S DEGREE FROM THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF SHARJAH.

passionate about creating spaces that balance functionality, aesthetics, and emotional impact.

My work spans across interior design and furniture design, with a focus on crafting experiences that reflect both cultural context and contemporary needs.

MEET MY FEATURED PROJECTS!

Project Description: Inhabitable Structure Chorographical notation, which translates to the dynamics of movement and sound into a visual system, and elements of sound into a written form. By linking choreographic notation to the fluidity of sheet music, a physical model was created to embody this translation, transforming musical notation into a three dimensional form. This project emphasized the importance of transitioning from two-dimensional thinking to three-dimensional realization. The initial phases allowed for experimental exploration, ensuring that the three-dimensional concepts that were inspired by Masahiro Chatani were effectively translated into plans and sections, ultimately bringing the architectural vision to life.

Project Description: Communal Pockets: Developing Fluid Spaces within a Residential Hall This design project, winner of the GUA (global undergraduate awards) highly commended, was focused on the redesign of an existing dormitory on our campus that lacked the amenities and communal elements that create dynamism on a campus, leading to a vacancy rate of over 50%. Our approach to the redesign of the hall featured an analysis of circulation and movement through the building, which is highly constrained by the existing geometry, having 45° and 90° angles throughout the space. The analysis and experiments with flow led to the creation of pockets of space which slow residents down and create areas of activity and social engagement. The softly curved and inward spiraling pockets include amenities that students require for a more convenient, functional, educational and fun quality of life. The dorms are separated into two blocks, arranged around large courtyards and connected at the entrance lobby. Large and small communal spaces are distributed across the two courtyard blocks to create a more interactive living community where students from both blocks are encouraged to mix, meet and interact. The new design features a new lobby with lively commercial areas such as a student run cafe, enclosed seating areas which can be used for presentations, comfortable waiting areas for guests and multiple entrances to ease the commute from the dorm to the larger campus. Spiraling nooks and eddies are also used to provide different communal spaces throughout the rest of the dormitory. Formal spaces such as the library and informal spaces like a laundry/study room establish a range of spaces where students can interact and form relationships with their friends and peers.

To enhance the spatial experience and reflect the family’s lifestyle, much of the furniture was custom-designed, tailored to both the architecture and the specific needs of each family member.

The base is crafted from solid wood, with precise slits cut to allow the seat and backrest to be seamlessly inserted. The seat and back are made from pressed bendy plywood finished with a walnut veneer, contrasting the solidity of the structure with a lighter, more fluid surface. The concept behind the design is the idea of a heavy, grounded form being pierced by something thin, generating tension and resulting in curves. This dialogue between solidity and delicacy informs both the structural logic and the visual language of the piece. The chair was fully handcrafted by myself under the guidance of my professor, reflecting both technical skill and conceptual exploration. Final product photo credits: Professor Ammar Kalo
